Everyone knows how snotty the fuel pumps and lines get on these 20+ year out Mercedes especially here in the eastern rust belt.
I unfortunatly come accross one that is about as bad as they get. The lines were so rusted and snottly that removing them was near impossible. To make things worse all of the terminals had corrosion so bad that its amazing the vehicle even ran. Even spewing gas all over this Mercedes STILL RAN! Not well mind you, but it ran!
Making things even worse the casings of the pumps were also leaking and what I found hard to believe was that dispite all of this rust and carnage the unit remained in tact and did not crumble as I was almost sure it would.
Luckly for our customer we had an entire fuel pump assy on the shelf. Considering that this unit was in no way salvageable, it was the path of least resistance and surly the best bet considering we all know how much these sorts of things cost from the dealer.
I have taken some photos of the damaged unit and also the used one. Interestingly enough the old one come off rather nice, the hose clamps I was even able to re-use! The customer is on a budget so much to his advantage the job went rather well.
