Why mandating insurance just hurts the people that are FORCED to buy it.

Living in Michigan it is required to have proof of insurance when renewing your licence plates. Being close to my birthday I had the unfortunate experience of shopping around to ensure I was getting the best rate.

In doing so I learned that forcing people to buy a service, such as insurance, will only lead to the consumer being ripped off. Here is why,

Now that auto insurance has been a mandatory requirment for registering and plating automobiles for quite some time insurance companies have found ways to offer insurance policies that meet the minimum requirement of the law, yet pretty much limit any possibility they will have to pay out in a claim.

My insurance on a 1991 Mercedes for PLPD (The absolute bare minimum required by the state) is about $1000 per year, and thats just about everywhere I checked. I got rates from AAA, Geiko, Progressive and All State. All of them within a hundred dollars of each other and some of them companies even require you buy a yearly membership in order to buy their insurance (AAA).

Now for $1000 per year, should I get in an accident and total my vehicle I will get ZERO dollars. This is often called PLPD here in Michigan. If I do not have insurance coverage that estimate would have been higher. I asked the representative exacly what I get for $1000 a year and he said to me "If you get sued we will cover your legal expenses up to $50,000". That's it! Personal property and bodily injury coverage is so low on these PLPD policies that they wouldn't even cover a 1 day stay in a hospital, let alone if you needed to be air-lifted or transported via ambulance.

So what we have here is an FINE EXAMPLE of why making people buy insurance is a BAD IDEA. It pretty much forces everyone to buy insurance, however the minimum requiments that are usually set out by law really couldnt be considered "Insurance" because in the event of a loss your pretty much not covered. And since the state is on the hook for uninsured motorist, the state actually gets involved in paying most of the money in the event someone does not have insurance, or just the minumums.

I got a feeling that the new mandate to buy heath insurance will be much the same, where in order to comply and not have to pay the fine you will have to buy a policy that really isnt worth a damn anyway, and thus you will just be paying because of the mandate to do so.

I asked one of the insurance agents what it would cost to purchase a good policy that covered collision with higher maximums and the cost was in the $3000 a year stratosphere. That breaks down to a few hundred dollars a month, and you can bet your ass when something does happen they will try and weezle out of it somehow.

So here you have a situation where insurance companies KNOW you HAVE to buy something, so over the years they figured out a way to offer insurance that meets the minumum requirements, yet pretty much ensures you have nothing in terms of coverage. This way they can be sure that the money you pay each year stays in their coffers. Should you want something MORE than the minimum they will charge you so much money it's not even worth it, and when the time does come that you have a loss you can bet your sweet ass they will wiggle their way out of it.

Yes this is a serious problem... It's called the fleecing of Americans and it's soon going to be a nation-wide fleecing where it wont matter what state your in, we will all be forced to either buy a crappy policy that meets the minimum requirements, or raped for a plan that offers a little more. Should you refuse both your going to get a fine. Should you be poor other people will pay for your insurance, and that insurance you get will be better than the guy who has to pay for his own minimum requirement insurance that isn't worth a damn.

Did I forget to mention that in addition to insurance the state wants $300 for plates and registration? Yes every year I bitch about it, and every year I end up getting fleeced along with millions of other Michiganders. Soon everyone in America will learn what happens when you offer a private business of any product or service a "Mandate" to buy their product or service.

If Obama ever had to pay for a thing in his life he might know this, and would have thought twice about a heath care mandate. As it stands he grew up on handouts, and once he got into government he could give a hoot what "Regular" people get stuck with.

On the other hand, If there were no mandate to purchase auto insurance, most people wouldn't buy it - so it would cost more for those who did.

Just imagine having a old geizer blow a red light and plow through the side of your Mercedes causing severe injury to you and Brandee... Wouldn't you at that point hope that he had been forced to buy car insurance? If anything, your argument makes a case for stronger government regulations of insurance companies, and higher coverage requirements.

Well PowerStroker, I drive big body Mercedes in hopes of a better chance in a situation above. Yet still their are ways of making things a mandate without making them mandatory. For example taxes, registration fee's, tobacco taxes, lottery taxes, fast food taxes and all the other taxes out there should be enough.

As a Republican I am pro-business, but to me a business is no longer a business when they are intertwined with the government who then FORCE people to buy the service.

Look at Social Security... They stole and squandered all that money.

No PowerStroker... If a guy hit me and the wife while driving their is a higher than likely chance that (1) The guy has no insurance, or (2) The guy is carrying the state minimum. In either case if the damages are extensive enough the State will end up paying the most. So really whats the point?

Here's a little "true" story for you. A good friend of mine who I have known for almost 12 years got into an accedent much like you discribed above. He was the passenger in a 2000's Ford Taurus and was broadsided by some old people who blew a red light in a VAN! Needless to say he got pretty screwed up and even had to be air lifted to the hospital. I had to drive his dad to the scene where we saw him loaded into the chopper. He had collapsed lungs, broken ribs, and pretty much was in real bad shape. The driver of the vehicle he was in had top notch AAA insurance.

Luckily he turned out to be okay and didn't die, although I am sure the insurance company wished he did. This happened almost two years ago. Yesterday I talked to him and he's real bad off. AAA has been literally squeezing him, refusing to pay for the chopper ride, his attorney is pretty expensive costing him 50% of anything he might HOPE to get as a settlement. He has all kinds of medical bills rolling in and has seen very little to NOTHING in terms of help from AAA. The insurance company tries to string you out so long in court that really it will cause you to go broke, or at least lose your good credit because the hospitals and Dr.'s just tag your credit until such time as the insurance company pays up and thats a BIG IF too. He is constantly being called by collection agencies, and he's in such bad shape I am having to loan him money here and there. Before that he used to spot me cash on occasion and let me borrow his toys. Now he's lucky if he can keep his Mustang because these medical bill collectors are after him.

Does that sound like insurance to you? It's clear to see PowerStroker that even if fully insured people are still getting screwed by these insurance companies. The fact they have a legal mandate on their side for people to buy their service ensures all kinds of legislation gets passed that lets them out of certain liabilities, it also creates an atmosphere that they get so much time to settle that the person who has a loss will suffer so badly waiting that they are forced to settle for peanuts, if anything.

If you don't like an insurance company they could care less. They know you HAVE to buy their service, so they are not worried about what other people say about them. In a real "Private" business these companies could not get away with this kind of thing, people would go somewhere else or just simpily figure out it's not worth it to give them ANY MONEY and roll the dice. But since there are mandates people are forced to deal with these people, and government is forced to cater to these companies because the state or federal government has made insurance a mandate.

I hope you don't have to witness what insurance companies do to people first hand, or have to watch a close friend go thru the same kind of thing. I have all kinds of horror stories about insurance companies of my own, but my friends is an example of what happens in a SERIOUS loss where like you mentioned above someone broadsides you and serious bodily harm is done.

People drive crazier and live more dangerous when insured, be it medical or auto. It's a proven fact they will take more risks. Of course no one is more crazy than the insurance industry. Here is a link to a list of the 10 worst insurance companies out there.

Well.... AAA is a monster around these parts... They ended up cutting me a hell of a deal @ $300 every 6 months and a low down payment. Then again I am one year older today and maybe it put me in a lower bracket. So AAA sucked me back in. Let's hope I don't need a chopper ride.

The State however (Michigan) didn't seem to mind my temper-tantrum when asked to pay the outragous $300 plate fee. They simpily said "You want them or not sir.?", but they did mention in another 5 years I could qualify for a historic plate @ $30 for 10 years! I thought to myself, "I should have bought a 1986 560 SEL", but they arent as nice. I bitch about it every year, thanks for reading.
