G'day to all fellow W126 lovers. I have owned my 300se for about 6 weeks now and all seems well. It is winter here at the moment so cool but summer not far away. I have noticed that the temp gauge starts to creep up when stuck at the lights. What I wanted to know (and I have searched Google) is how the two fans in front of the radiator work.
This W126 does not have the large single fan but two equal sized fans. I have not heard or seen any of the fans working to date. Any info will be much appreciated.
Sounds like it could be your fan clutch causing that problem. Have someone rev the engine while you look at the fan, it should make roaring sound from the air being sucked thru the radiator and increase speed. If the clutch is bad it will just appear to be free wheeling without the sound of air being moved.
Also check you coolant level too. Although what you discribe sounds like the fan clutch.
You can test your electric fans by pulling the sensor plug. There should be two plugs, one for your gauge inside the car and another for the fans. They should both be located around the upper radiator hose where it meets at the engine. Should be single pole sensors. The electric fans should kick on any time the AC is activated or if the temp gets in excess off 100-110 C.
But it sounds like a fan clutch to me.
