The most "conservative" Republican party platform in history.

Do you guys agree with the entirety of the new Republican party platform?  Specifically the part about no abortions whatsoever even if the life of the mother is in jeopardy, or the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest?  If not what is your reasoning.  Is there anything in the new platform at all that you guys disagree with?

GOP OKs platform barring abortions, gay marriage

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and cut taxes to energize the economy and create jobs.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

Both parties routinely approve platforms at their conventions every four years, meant to encapsulate their principles and goals. Much of their details are customarily ignored when it comes to actually governing.

Even so, a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found more people interested in the GOP platform than in the upcoming acceptance speeches by presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The survey found that 52 percent said they were interested in learning about the Republican platform, compared to 44 percent interested in Romney's speech and 46 percent interested in Ryan's.

"This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who led the party's platform committee. "It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings and neighborhoods without hope."

Democrats lambasted the platform and immediately sought to tie it to Romney, who has differed from some of its details. For instance, he has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is among several Democrats in Tampa trying to get their party's views heard, called the platform's stances on abortion and immigration "draconian" and "extreme" and blamed Romney. "What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another," Villaraigosa said. "He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can't have it both ways."

Here are key elements of the Republican platform:

JOB CREATION:

It states that the best jobs program is economic growth. "We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs."

___

SMALL BUSINESS:

The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.

___

TAXES:

"We reject the use of taxation to redistribute income, fund unnecessary or ineffective programs or foster the crony capitalism that corrupts both politicians and corporations."

It says a Republican administration would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It says the party would strive to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

The party backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.

___

MARRIAGE:

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

___

VOTER INTEGRITY:

"Voter fraud is a political poison," the platform says. It praises legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.

___

GUN CONTROL:

The party says it opposes legislation intended to restrict Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the assault weapons ban passed during the Clinton presidency.

___

ABORTION:

The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions. It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

___

ENERGY:

The party is committed to domestic energy independence and an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, backing the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It criticizes the Obama administration for picking winners and losers in the energy sector and expresses support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.

It adds: "We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." It calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."

____

MEDICARE and MEDICAID:

The platform pledges to move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.

Medicaid services for low income people would be transformed into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.

____

IMMIGRATION:

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.

____

HEALTH CARE:

It states that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act pushed through by President Barack Obama and that Republican victories in November would guarantee that the act is never implemented. It proposes a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

____

EDUCATION:

Republicans support consumer choice, including home schooling, local innovations such as single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. It says Republicans renew their call for replacing family planning programs for teens "with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior."

____

DEFENSE:

The platform says Republicans are "the party of peace through strength" and support the concept of American exceptionalism "the conviction that our country holds a unique place and role in human history." It criticizes the current administration for its weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and its reductions in military spending. The Republican national military strategy "restores as a principal objective the deterrence using the full spectrum of our military capabilities."

I definitely believe abortion should be legal if the woman is raped, or if her life is in danger. I believe Romney also has this position (although Ryan does not). I DON'T believe public funds should be used for abortion (with the exceptions I mentioned previously, if the public funding were needed).

I don't have an issue with same-sex unions being legally recognized, and full financial/tax/legal benefits. I don't like it being called "marriage" which I believe the definition of should be between a man and a woman. If they want to come up with another name for it, fine. I agree it's a state, not a federal issue as to whether and how it's recognized.

Yes, I too feel that a woman has a right to abort if she was raped or having the baby would endanger her life. I don't know why P.R. feels otherwise but I know Romney does not harbor these feelings.

I DO NOT feel gay couples should get tax breaks ect. with regards to their Unions, and to be honest I don't feel such unions should be recognized at all in terms of "marriage". It's an insult to people who actually contribute to society to have some homosexual or lesbo claim they want the same benefits as traditional heterosexual marriages. I feel VERY strongly on this issue!

So you don't mind belonging to a party with extreme views so long as the guy at the top of the ticket ignores his party's platform? What happens if something happened that caused a need for Paul Ryan to assume the presidency?

Seems like we have a guy currently in the presidency with "extreme views" -- Obamacare anyone? Something that a majority of Americans don't support? Jeremiah Wright and Obama's Weathermen buddies are mainstream? The most liberal senate voting record at the time of his election is mainstream? Uhhh...no.

Romney's supposedly a flip-flopper, right? So by the Democrats' own logic, since he flips between one view and the other, his true views must be somewhere in the middle. Hardly extreme...

You need to put some more thought into these things, PowerStroker. Burping up old, tired Democratic talking points doesn't cut the mustard, particularly when your boy is headed out of office on the boot of the American electorate. Jimmy "one term" Carter reincarnated....

SELLC, the only problem I do see with the Republican platform on abortion is that it allows folks like stoma to slip through the cracks ... either he is a failed abortion (brain-damaged) or he was born in a place where abortions are not given at all. Yikes !

Ah cmon now, there's nothing wrong with Stoma.  But you do bring up another reason why abortion should be legal.  Many birth defects like mental retardation can be detected before birth.

Perhaps if your wife happened to get pregnant with a retarded baby, you might have the resources to take care of it your whole life and leave a trust fund in place to care for him/her once you're gone, and you may even feel blessed to have the opportunity to do so.  But do you really think everyone else should be forced to do the same if they ended up in that situation?  I know for me, I wouldn't want a retarded baby...  And I wouldn't want to be born if I were retarded either.

The reason I titled this thread the way I did, is because I'm having trouble reconciling exactly how increasing the size of government to the point that it can monitor every pregnancy and make sure the government's desired outcome happens with each one is somehow "conservative."  And any mother who miscarries would possibly be subject to a murder investigation.  There's nothing conservative about your vision in that regard...  Right wing sure, but not conservative.

If abortions are illegal, it doesn't stop them from happening, it just stops the safe ones from happening and greatly increases the chances of your daughters dying from an un-regulated Mexican drug, or from complications resulting from a coat hanger or back alley abortion.  I know this, because prior to Roe V Wade, that's exactly what happened.  And one of the leading causes of death for women prior to Roe V Wade was a botched abortion procedure of some kind.

You "conservatives" sure like to impede civil liberties while you advocate getting big government off our backs.  It's hypocritical, and we have already seen it fail miserably in this regard prior to Roe V Wade.

Taking away civil liberties to make you feel better about yourself always backfires.  Abortion is one example, but so is Prohibition against alcohol which your side was in favor of until it failed so miserably that an entire industry of organized crime and violence was born.  I would argue that the war on drugs is failing just as miserably, but it is not yet politically viable enough to call you guys out on that one yet, although Ron Paul is ahead of the curve on that one.  If you truly want to see our debt go down, and eventually your taxes too, then you need to stop crusading against drug use because most of our prisoners are there for drug related offenses.  We imprison the highest percentage of our population in the world.  It's not cheap for the taxpayers, and neither is jailing women for having an abortion, or doctors for performing them.

I would argue that any crusade against gay liberties is equally detrimental to the ideal America that our founders envisioned we would one day achieve.  Minority rights should never be put to a majority vote.  And it wasn't that long ago that women and blacks were second class citizens.  And I would submit to you, that the progress that elevated their status didn't lower yours.  Neither would elevating the status of homosexuals.  My hope is that one day, gay rights won't scare you any more than womens rights do today.

Dr. Martin Luther King once said:

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

I sincerely hope your policies aren't the reason for the arc of the moral universe being so long.  But my heart is telling me that's exactly the reason behind it.

Here's an ABC News / Yahoo News commentator who was caught live putting down Romney, on the air.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/08/29/yahoo-editor-fired-over-anti-romney-joke/

Just another case of the blatant liberal bias of the news media. Yahoo fired him immediately over his remark.

PowerStroker ... I seem to remember that it was the Republican party (Lincoln, et al.) who freed the slaves back in the 1860s .... your beloved Democrat party was against civil rights for minorities for a very long time ... deep into the 20th Century. Remember the Dixiecrats? All of those Democrat lawmakers in the south who opposed civil rights?

In fact, most minorities voted Republican until they started getting Great Society handouts courtesy of LBJ in the 1960s. It was a shrewd strategy to get as many citizens as hooked on government largesse as possible, so they would continue to vote for politicians that would give them even more.

And Obama has continued that ... to the point where more than one-half of the American population now gets some form of basic, direct aid from the government (excluding Medicare). Removing work requirements from welfare as Obama has done is an utter abomination and is against everything this country is all about.

Luckily, this November that is going to end. And not a moment too soon.....

I see you chose not to address the questions I raised in my previous post.  Not that I blame you, It must be difficult to debate a logic driven person when all you have is ideology.

I am fully aware that the Republican party has had some shining moments in the past - long before the current crop took hold.  I am also aware of the racism that existed historically in Southern Democrats.

But this is today, and rather than dwell on the past, we should consider our future.  It is up to us to shape our respective parties for our generation.

Since you so proudly tout the great things Republicans did in the past (Lincoln freeing slaves), am I to understand that you also want Republicans to continue that great civil rights legacy today by granting equal rights to homosexuals, protecting a womans right to choose, and de-criminalizing the use of marijuana???????

If so, I applaud you.  If not, you got some splaining to do.

What does legalizing marijuana have to do with civil rights ?

Where do homosexuals not have equal rights as human beings?

Where are abortions illegal today in the US?

If you can grow something in your backyard, it shouldn't be illegal to smoke so long as doing so doesn't endanger other people - No driving while under the influence of anything is still good policy

Homosexuals can't marry in most states thanks to Republican sponsored ballot innitiatives that put minority rights up for a majority vote.

Abortions are technically legal, at least at a federal level, but state Republicans across the country have proposed and passed a record number of restrictions and regulations on abortion providers that has actually eliminated the procedure in several states. Wonderful legislation like mandating a certain size broom closet in abortion clinics and requiring any abortion provider to have admiting privlidges at the local hospital - which is very difficult to get when several of the states in question don't have an abortion provider that actually lives in the state - many fly in weekly and even though they have applied for the hospital admitting privlidges - quess which party affiliation the hospital administrators belong to.

So you are saying you would not mind your neighbor growing coca and popie plants?

Are you serious PowerStroker? Marriage is between and man and woman! If everyone turned homo today the human race would be extinct in 100 years.

making same sex marriage legal doesn't increase the number of gay people, it just increases the number of gay people getting married.

Ryan: Don't interfere with legalized medical pot

DENVER (AP) Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan says the federal government shouldn't interfere with states that have legalized medical marijuana.

The Wisconsin congressman tells KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs that he personally doesn't approve of medical marijuana laws. But he says that states should have the right to choose whether to legalize the drug for medical purposes.

In response to a reporter's question, Ryan said: "It's up to Coloradans to decide."

The interview was taped while Ryan campaigned this week in Colorado Springs and aired Friday.

Colorado is one of 17 states, plus the District of Columbia, that allow medical marijuana.

The Obama administration at first signaled that it wouldn't interfere with state-sanctioned marijuana distribution. But the Justice Department has since angered marijuana activists by shutting down dispensaries in California and Colorado.
