ABC canceled its hit sitcom "Roseanne" on Tuesday after the show's biggest star, Roseanne Barr, went on a racist Twitter rant.
"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.
Disney CEO Bob Iger added on Twitter that "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing."
The cancellation stunned Hollywood. The revival of "Roseanne" premiered to huge ratings just three months ago. Pre-production was already underway on a second season, which was scheduled for Tuesdays at 8 p.m. this fall.
Barr's talent agency, ICM Partners, dropped her following her tweets.
"What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency," the agency said in a statement. "Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client."
Barr went on A tweetstorm Tuesday morning, attacking Valerie Jarrett, Chelsea Clinton and George Soros.
ABC went silent for several hours while deciding what to do. By late morning on the West Coast, executives had decided to boot the reboot.
When asked why ABC ultimately decided to cancel the show, a Disney source said, "It's a question of right and wrong. And it's a question of our company's values."
Reactions to the decision were overwhelming and largely positive.
Congressman John Lewis thanked ABC, saying that "There is not any room in our society for racism or bigotry."
"Some things apparently are more important than money," even for a network like ABC, "and that's heartening," CNN's Van Jones said on the air.

Donald Trump Jr. retweets Roseanne Barr's controversial George Soros claims
When it comes to promoting conspiracy theories, Donald Trump Jr. seems to take after his father.

As Roseanne Barr embarked on a Tuesday morning Twitter barrage that led ABC to cancel her sitcom, the presidents son retweeted two of her posts attacking billionaire Democratic donor George Soros, including one that called Soros, a Holocaust survivor, a Nazi.
Donald Trump Jr. retweeted two of Roseanne Barrs claims about George Soros on Tuesday.
An earlierBarr tweet with a racist slur against former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett was cited by the network when it pulled the plug on its top-rated show. Barr has since deleted the tweet, which referred to Jarrett, who is African-American, asthe offspring of the Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.
Trump Jr. did not retweet that one.
A spokesman for Soros said Barrs false allegations are insulting to the victims of the Holocaust and an affront to Mr. Soros & his family, who against the odds managed to survive.
Right-wing conspiracy theories portraying Soros who is Jewish and was 9 years old when World War II began as a Nazi collaborator have become internet staples. Propagated by the likes of former Fox News host Glenn Beck, actor James Wood, and conservative commentators Ann Coulter, Dinesh DSouza and Mike Cernovich, that belief has become an article of faith in some Republican quarters.

But after Beck devoted a show to exposing what he believed to be the secret truth about Soros, Anti-Defamation League director Abraham Foxman issued a statement calling the segment repugnant.
For a political commentator or entertainer to have the audacity to say inaccurately that theres a Jewish boy sending Jews to death camps, as part of a broader assault on Mr. Soros, thats horrific, Foxman wrote. While I, too, may disagree with many of Soros views and analysis on the issues, to bring in this kind of innuendo about his past is unacceptable. To hold a young boy responsible for what was going on around him during the Holocaust as part of a larger effort to denigrate the man is repugnant.
Trump Jr., like his father, has a well-documented history of retweeting or liking politically divisive messages on Twitter, as he did in February when he liked a message on the platform that promoted a conspiracy theory about 17-year-old Parkland shooting survivorDavid Hogg, or when, in 2016, Trump Jr. retweeted an attack on Hillary Clinton byKevin MacDonald, who the Times of Israel called a psychologist notorious for his theories of Jewish manipulation and control.
The Trump organization did not respond to a request for a comment.
What did she say on Twitter? You know shes trying to keep current in the media. Ive NEVER cared for that person.
Guess she hit Chealsea and sorry ass but the Jarrette one got her. She said Valerie Jarrette looks like a cross between something from planet of the apes and a Muslim woman. Back to the "I remember thread" I remember when a comedian could say things like that, all of them and everyone laughed including them. Not with the PC society now.
I must preface that I am not a Roseanne fan. After her hard left views for so long, I'm still not convinced of her change of heart. It may very well be legitimate, I don't know,
That said, I find myself standing up for her over this. Granted, her tweet wasn't in the best taste (although I personally was not 'offended' -- words don't hurt me), yet she's said many, many outrageous things in years past. Personally, I think when ABC did this reboot of her show, I honestly think they had absolutely no clue it was going to be as accepted as it was, what with the way her character was politically and such. They were not prepared for it to be such a monstrous hit, therefore they were faced with, "Oh, shit....what do we do NOW?" They figured the character and the subject matter would fall flat. Now they have no choice but to continue, lest they lose the viewership and ratings they've gained as a result. Somehow, I think they didn't care about the ratings and viewership. Being as liberal as ABC is, I believe they were looking for, or waiting for, any reason or opportunity to pull the plug on a show they never expected to be a hit and certainly didn't fit their narrative. Convenient, and they could make it look justified.
ABC's statement called Roseanne's tweet, "abhorrent, repugnant, and didn't fit with (our) values." I find that statement hilarious, as there isn't a show on ABC any night of the week that doesn't have or showcase at least ONE gay character, and they push it! Those are 'values', ABC? That's something to be proud of?
Not really a setup, per se, but they sure didn't pass up the opportunity as quickly as it presented itself. In the meantime, Maude Behar continues to spew her ignorance, vitriol and hatred with no repercussions.
Yeah, this damn PC society making me share public restrooms and drinking fountains with those people. They won't even surrender their bus seat for me anymore.
I seen this today and immediately I was expecting Jimmy Kimmel's show to be taken off the air!
Still waiting...
Talk about a double standard!
The best part about Roseanne is that the liberal network known as ABC re-booted it to mock what they thought was the typical conservative lower income family.. What it did was backfire on them as Republicans ran with it and the stars of Rosanne played it off perfect! ABC aired the most vile and swanky sounding laughing Roseanne for months with that swanky background music just to annoy Republicans, and to be honest I was annoyed! Even posted about it a few times!
But after seeing the show and following it from week to week it was clear, the joke was on ABC and the liberals who tried so hard to mock the conservatives!
Joke is on ABC! The only shame here is that Roseanne won't bank on the next episodes, however everyone knows this is just a knee jerk reaction by ABC that means nothing. ABC just wants ratings which they turn into $$$ when the advertisements run. They don't have a leg to stand on in this.

I think ultimately people are just tired of the double standard that exist when it comes to Democrats making everything into a race issue, but only when it's convenient for their cause.

Are you suggesting that because Roseanne's ratings make it a good business decision, that it will live on.
By that logic, Sinclair and Clear Channel should be running nationally syndicated liberal talk radio.
So much for the free market.
I also wanted to mention, PowerStroker, that I have never heard of Sinclair and Clear Channel... Sorry...
What I do know, is that right now at this very moment ABC is streaming Roseanne and getting paid by way of advertisement dollars. You know something else? A royalty of each of them dollars goes right into Roseannes pocket, regardless if she was fired.
Oh Yeah, ABC is really taking a hard stand on Roseanne! LOL - all the way to the bank!

You don't feel that Roseanne has a right to her opinions IRL?
You don't feel that Roseanne has the right to get online and put her twist on political satire?
I bet you're totally okay with this PowerStroker!
Actually, as one who believes in applying the same standard evenhandedly, I think Roseanne does have a right to free speech and to express her opinions, just as ABC and Disney do. ABC is her boss, and I seem to recall you making the following argument:
You can find your quote here http://autotrend.activeboard.com/t64611912/please-mr-trump-let-me-pull-the-trigger/?page=1&sort=oldestFirst
It's just unfortunate that so many people are now losing a job due to the bigotry and ignorance of one person. And to think she ran for president in 2012. What is it that has been attracting people like this to the presidency lately? Coincidence maybe?

Could it be that eight long years of Obama's bullshit has caused people to really warm up to someone real? Someone that isn't always trying to look like someone they are not?
Liberals preach to the gills equality and rarely ever deliver any themselves.
I wouldn't worry too much about the writers and people behind the scenes of the Roseanne re-boot because she has already said that a majority of them are liberals. Of course ABC wants the chance to can all the liberals who couldn't even handle the simple task of mocking people! They are totally butt hurt that their little plan backfired and the old cast was able to pull off a hit that only clapped back the mocking.

Why is it okay for MSNBC's Chris Hayes to defame a group of voters based on their political affiliation!? Why is it okay for these assholes to do the same thing they are complaining about?
Fuck this guy! I wan't him FIRED! Why isn't this guy and it's news outlet getting sued!?

So what do we have here PowerStroker? A big publicity stunt where even Ambien is getting in the lime light? Yet these companies claim to be taking a stand, while raking in the profits of free publicity.
I still contend that we're all only as good as we are needed at the moment.
WWOD? What would Obama do in this situation? Call her a jackass and move on? Or maybe call her an idiot?

First of all, I would like to say that what she said was blatantly the definition of racism. Very black and white, said the shows co-host, referring specifically to Barrs tweet in which she equated former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett with an ape.
McCain, who is the daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), also took President Donald Trump and his administration to task.
I have been so disheartened by what is acceptable in the world right now, whats acceptable in the White House, and its refreshing to see someone take a stand and say, No. Not at ABC, not at this company. This is not acceptable rhetoric, she said. And its interesting that ABC holds a higher standard to their employees than apparently the White House does.
McCain took issue with that argument, and said she had previously been a fan of the new Roseanne and its portrayal of middle America.
I dont want network television to stay away from reflecting blue-collar people in the middle of the country, and I hope somebody who just isnt a crazy racist can make a show thats reflective of that, as well, she said.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg also had some strong words for Barr.
On Tuesday, Barr attempted to put attention on the outspoken liberal by posting a highly edited photo of Goldberg wearing a T-shirt featuring a violent image of Trump.
"So this is what I'm going to say, Roseanne," Goldberg said. "Just because you were caught with your pants down, don't try to drag other people down with you. Because there are times when you got to suck it up 'cause you stepped in doo."
