Tesla to be made in China from now on?

Looks like Elon Musk is ditching his American factory and moving operations over to China!

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/tesla-proposed-chinese-factory-crank-153600563.html

I guess Musk figures that if Apple can get away with it, so can he! I'm guessing Musk wants to learn the hard way like everyone else that take product to be made in China, that soon every part right down to the nuts and bolts will be copied by China and they will offer their own version of the Tesla at a third of the price in no time!

Not a good move by Musk if you ask me, although I am sure half the crap in a Tesla is already made in China anyway.

So basically Elon Musk is going to piss off his major US market who by far is Teslas biggest market for what amounts to sales less than 15,000 units in China!

Something tells me Tesla may be showing signs of fatigue, or at least looking like they will sell out to China or someone else.

I don't see how Tesla can save any money if tariffs on China imports increase. Seems foolish but everyone wants that cheap China labor.

Oh well, I never planned on buying one myself. I'll admit they are a fresh take on the automobile but I doubt I would pay what they are asking.

I saw he wants to build 500,000 in a 10 year period. Not into China made anything myself.

Yo,

No offense here guys, but if the Government supported his cause, & made it worth-while to keep the ball rolling in the US-of-A, he would IMO.

We have to remember that the DOE & Oil industries do not support revolutionary stuff like this, as it hurts the thickness of their wallets, & election campaign $$$...

My $00:02,

Rastus

I'm not so sure Rastus... The government over the past 8 years has given people $7,500 tax subsidies to buy "green" aka "electric" cars... The electric car must be able to stand on it's own now...

Making Tesla in China will just mean the vehicle will be much less popular in Tesla's biggest market, the USA. I was considering a used one, even looked around for one to better understand the new electric cars - then I seen the price tag! OMG! Even used ones $40+k! That's just insane! Once the vehicle is pure China I doubt there would be much interest in it for me and I think that many will feel the same way.

Then again, I think Elon Musk was thinking that perhaps making the car in China would make it more affordable for everyone, but trust that any savings the car will net in China would not pass down to the buyers, rather just go right in the Tesla coffers for the shareholders. There is that greed you speak of Rastus, because if Musk had a good thing going he sure as heck wouldn't have any problems here in the USA. If Musk want's problems, he is going to have them in China where they steal all his designs and create an inexpensive aftermarket source for their cars parts. China loves when idiot American companies move over there and China makes them hand over all their specifications to build copies at a fraction of the cost. As a consumer I can't say I mind having that option, but not to the point where a quality option is no longer available because China knock-off put them out of business.

I should also mention that once Craftsman tools (Sears) was taken over by a Chinese company the tool quality fell fast! Now days I don't even bother to trade in my Craftsman tools because I know the new one is 10 times weaker than the Made in USA one that I am exchanging. This is a true story! Especially the 1/4 inch sockets! They used to be made of at least a decent metal, not better than SnapOn but they weren't cheap quality. Now they are almost always broken or worn in short order. I'd imagine the same would hold true for Tesla if Musk sold the company to China. From what I understand much of the Tesla is already made in China and the parts are sent here and that appears to be one of the reasons Tesla thinks they are going to save, in shipping. Trumps tariffs will make Musk at least have a second thought about that move.

Then there is the fact that many people have been killed as a result of this auto-drive and batteries that catch fire. You would have to think the liability in such circumstances is what many would consider "high-risk". Then again, such is everything in the Auto business.

Yo,

Good points SELLC about China, & the indifferent quality of stuff being made over there. I guess sometimes it's the luck-of-the-draw maybe....However...

You should check-out the You-Tube documentary of "Nuclear Exodus, Pandora's Promise was a Lie", as the last hour is spent with Mr.Musk & his diverse plans for helping shape the future of our planet in a positive way, where we all survive, including plants & animals too...

* Electric cars
* Solar Energy Plans with NO out-lay from customers.
* Affordable Space Travel

Are just some of the things he discusses in some detail, with likely the best deal being for anyone state-side to acquire solar-power for free...Yes, for free, but learn about the deal for yourself....

I'd say the move to Chinese manufacturing is likely 2-fold, firstly to make costs more affordable for everyone, & secondly, he's likely been pushed over there by our dinosaur thinking politicians, that are only interested in cashing-in for themselves, & not seeing the necessary changes for the future. Luckily, these folks will be dead & gone in a few more years, if we make it that far.

Take the time to watch the aforementioned documentary, so as to bring everyone up-to-speed, so that y'all understand the crazy, backward & misinformed decisions that are being made by our politicians.

Cheers,

Rastus.

China steel suks. All of it. Never get a cast iron pan from China, steel is all different throughout, hot and cold spots. It all suks. Just like their 50's and 60's pot metal.
