The sticker shock from that repair estimate made this owner decide to just blow it up.

What a pisser ! $22-K or 30-Kg of TNT ?...The relief on the owners face says it all !

I guess he didn't pay too much for the car in the first place.

I'd love to see what he wrote on the insurance claim (if any) for damage suffered...

On the Ford Mach E, which is basically Ford's copy of a Tesla, you can replace individual internal battery components. Here is one we have apart right now. One of the power modules/battery packs failed. These can be replaced in pairs once the battery is dropped from the vehicle and opened up. It involves whatever it costs to get 2 new power modules, and about $600 for 2 packs of thermally conductive glue to attach them to an internal cooling plate, plus labor charges. Before the new modules are installed you must look at some scan tool data of the other cells, then use a special balance charger to pre-charge the new modules to the same level as the others. It's really interesting inside the traction battery assembly, it contains the 12 power modules, an assembly of high voltage contactors, internal liquid cooling, a computer, and a few other things. Actually the fuse for the high voltage AC compressor is inside this unit too, so hope your ac compressor doesn't short out because you'll have to drop this battery and take it apart to replace that fuse. The individual power modules are heavy as fuck too, Ford sent all dealerships special brackets to use with an engine hoist for replacing them. And a special hydraulic lift table to remove and install the entire assembly from the vehicle.

By no means is this cheap, but it's a lot better than having to replace the entire battery assembly like apparently Tesla requires.

This particular one was bought back under the lemon law, and has been sitting apart for several weeks because the conductive glue is on back order.

Cool post & pics PowerStroker !

Mitsubishi was replacing quite a few battery-packs too under warranty when I was working there...And to be honest, the warranty shed they had on site was full of new & failed replacement parts...And was just as large as our work-shop...

A similar jig was also supplied for removal & installation of new battery assy.

I suggest the lesson learned here folks is DON'T BUY ELECTRIC CARS 2nd-hand, or once they're out of warranty...Or you'll be needing around 30-kg of TNT to put a smile back on your face lol ! Or you could call "Myth-busters" to do the job for you lol !

That "conductive glue" may necessitate wearing a face-mask / ventilator for good-reason too ;) !

Good lord... more $hit to buy!

Maybe the aftermarket will come out with one that doubles as a bench jack to also do engine cradle drops so that the outlay wont bite as much and all the bases are covered for the independent...

Nice to see Fords thinking ahead on this, probably because they have dealerships all over the country in every state and would never get away with the kind of shit Musk and Tesla do!

Which by the way, Tesla just recalled almost a half million model S and 3 vehicles today.

Funny how in my recent SBA application we made mention of funds for use to adapt to popular EV vehicles... and now here we are... still waiting!
