This is a foreign policy disaster for Obama. I believe it will cost him a couple of points in the polls, and further assure Romney's victory.

Anyone who thinks Obozo's "let's apologize, be nice and talk with our enemies" foreign policy has been successful has been smoking crack.

You see what weak foreign policy gets us? The overrunning of US embassies in Egypt and Libya is pretty much the same as what happened in 1979 when Iranians took over the US embassy in Teheran and took 52 hostages. At least the Iranians didn't kill Americans.

You should ask Gaddhafi about his apology from Obama.

I wasn't aware that Obozo went in and took Gadhafi out, like he did with bin Laden.

Oh, he did take out Gadhafi? Really? I didn't see that in any news reports!

>> You should ask Gaddhafi about his apology from Obama.

No need to. There's a litany of other countries: North Korea, Iran, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, Egypt....the list goes on.

And our "let's make nice, be soft, apologize and befriend our enemies" strategy has gotten us exactly WHERE with these countries?

C'mon PowerStroker, you apologist. It's plainly obvious that US foreign policy has been an abject disaster over the past 4 years. So much for "resetting" relations with our enemies, like "The One" promised during the 2008 campaign. You know, the guy who said he would stop the rise of the seas and the warming of the Earth ?!?

Just a shame...

What's more bothersome is the reasoning behind it. A movie!? WTF!

For gawds sake they have to know what our firepower is like! And just a little while ago we were helping them!

Just reeks of a poor job. A new loose end someone is going to have to tie up.

Still... You had to be one crazy bad ass mother fucker to be an Ambassador to Libya. From some of the photos I have seen it looks like they took a serious beating. I'm down for a little payback! Course as Gerry said, Obama already let the snakes in the door over there.

It's a mess any way you slice it. A SERIOUS international crime! Over a fucking movie! Why in the world we helped these pathetic people! Hell it took Ghadafi an army to keep them somewhat in check! Flare ups in Egypt.

I will say this much, with as much as all of this cost us Americans it's high time we start finding a way to collect from nations that elect to force our hand. It's unacceptable and the biggest slap in the face is the fact we just spent serious money helping them overthrow Ghadafi!

And Obama wants to cut our Military's spending.... I don't think thats a good idea... Although Obama seems to think it's not a jungle out there, I can assure him it IS! We can change every which way but all the hope in the universe isnt going to stop these power grabs, greed and law of the jungle mentality.

This is my whole problem with getting rid of the likes of Saddam, Gadhafi, and Gorbachev. You see, these guys kept their various factions in line. Only one thing keeps these Muslims in line -- brutality and getting the crap beat out of them. And only a dictator is in a position to do this. As soon as we go in and start helping get rid of these dictators (all of which we made back in the day and thus are responsible for), these muslims start getting out of line and flaring up. Notice how nice and neat that Gadhafi and Saddam kept their countries in, for literally DECADES? The Soviets too -- heck, they had all KINDS of ethnic groups under their thumb. You never heard a peep out of them until these guys got weak and deposed, and them WHAM ! All hell breaks loose.

It is interesting to think that all of these international bogey-men: Saddam, Gadhafi, Castro, bin Laden, Ferdinand Marcos, Noriega, and many more ... were all originally creations of and fully supported by ..... THE USA !!! Until we didn't need them anymore, then they became our enemy.

^^^ Kind of wish George W would have thought of that?  Saddam didn't just keep his country in check, he kept Iran in check.

It's probably not a good idea to politicize the attack on the embasy though, as Romney is finding out.

Romney under friendly fire for his response to embassy attack in Libya

By Holly Bailey, Yahoo! News

Will Mitt Romney's hasty response to the deadly attacks on the American diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya go down as the misstep that doomed his campaign to unseat President Barack Obama?

The Republican presidential candidate came under fire from Republicans and Democrats on Wednesday for politicizing the outbreak of deadly violence in the Middle East, including the breaching of the American Embassy in Cairo and an attack on the American Consulate in Libya, which claimed the life of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other diplomatic workers.

Romney released a scathing statement on Tuesday night blasting the Obama administration for its "disgraceful" response to the attacks. The statement was at first embargoed until after midnight in order to avoid publicly criticizing Obama on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks but then was released anyway. In the statement, which came just hours before Stevens was confirmed to be among those killed, Romney suggested the White House had chosen to "sympathize with those who waged the attacks" instead of condemning the attackers.

Romney was referring to a statement issued by the American Embassy in Cairo condemning an obscure anti-Muslim YouTube video that had set off the demonstrations. But the embassy's statement had been an effort to head off the violencenot released after the assaults on American diplomatic missions, as Romney's statement suggested.

Steve Schmidt, who managed John McCain's 2008 campaign, told Yahoo News that Romney's decision to stand behind his initial criticism of Obama could damage his image with voters.

"For people who are running for president, this is a test where people evaluate their mettle as commander in chief, and the Romney campaign put out a statement before the facts were in that politicized the matter and gratuitously attacked the administration for something they did not do," Schmidt said. "The decision to double down on the initial mistake has put them into a potentially very dangerous political situation. During a foreign policy crisis, you can't build a position on a foundation of politics. The situation remains serious, it's volatile and Romney is appearing to be very political."

The danger for Romney is that his response to the Middle East attacks feeds into a consensus among the news media that his campaign to unseat Obama is in serious trouble. For the fourth time in recent months, prominent conservatives have gone public with fretting over the direction of Romney's campaigna panic set off most recently by conservative radio host Laura Ingraham's suggestion Monday that if Romney can't beat Obama then the Republican Party should be "shut down." On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal editorial board piled on, suggesting Romney could lose the election because he's been too vague when it comes to explaining his policies.

"Mistakes like this happen when a campaign begins to feel under pressure," Schmidt told Yahoo News. "The Democrats had a more successful convention, the president's opened up a lead in the polls, there's been a lot of criticism by conservative commentators about campaign strategy. They acted too quickly, too rashly, too politicallylooking obviously for a way to change the narrative, the dynamic in the race."

A senior Romney aide, who declined to be named, dismissed the idea that the Republican candidate had been damaged by his response to the attacks in Libya and Egypt. The aide insisted to Yahoo News that the election would likely come down to an "overall referendum" on Obama's performance in officeincluding on foreign policy and the economy. "'Are you better off than you were four years ago?' is the question that will determine the election," the Romney aide said.

Romney did not back off his criticism of the Obama administration Wednesday at a hastily arranged press conference in Florida. "It's a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values," Romney told reporters. "It's never too early for the U.S. government to condemn attacks on Americans and defend our values. ... When our grounds are being attacked, being breached, the first response of the United States must be outrage."

It was an uncharacteristically aggressive stance from Romney, who has largely kept his campaign focused on the economy. And it was an offensive that was not matched by Romney's allies on Capitol Hill or within the foreign policy communitymany of whom did not respond to requests from Yahoo News to comment on the record about Romney's response.

McCain, the 2008 Republican nominee who has not shied from criticizing Obama on foreign policy issues, did not mention the president in a joint statement with Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut on the attackschoosing instead to condemn the attackers. Just before Romney took the mic at his press conference, McCain posted a message on Twitter praising a public statement from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying she had adopted the "right message and tone." Asked by Yahoo News whether he agrees with Romney's response, McCain's office did not respond to a request for comment.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who has campaigned with Romney and spoke at the Republican National Convention that nominated Romney for president, also didn't embrace Romney's criticism against Obamafocusing her statement instead on the "tragic loss of life." A spokeswoman for Rice did not respond to a request for comment from Yahoo News about whether Rice agreed with Romney's response.

Romney did have defenders, including Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolinawho issued a statement calling Romney's response "absolutely right"and Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, who penned an op-ed declaring "Romney Is Right."

But their efforts were largely overshadowed by other members of Team Romney who didn't agree with the candidate's response. Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, a top Romney surrogate, told National Journal's Major Garrett that the campaign "probably should have waited" to issue its response. Meanwhile, Tom Ridge, a Romney ally who served as secretary of Homeland Security under former President George W. Bush, disputed Romney's suggestion that Obama was sympathizing with the enemy. "I don't think President Obama sympathizes with those who attacked us," Ridge told the liberal site Think Progress. "I don't think any American does."

And plenty of anonymous Republicans immediately pounced, with one "very senior Republican foreign policy hand" telling BuzzFeed's Ben Smith it was Romney's "Lehman moment"a reference to McCain's bungling of the looming financial crisis during the 2008 campaign.

Foreign policy has been a tricky issue for Romney. While he has sought to assume the advantage on the issue by playing up Obama's tense relationship with Israel and other American allies, he has come under criticism for his own murky foreign policy stancesincluding his position on the war in Afghanistan. Romney took an overseas trip in July that was meant to burnish his foreign policy credentials and cast himself as a statesman in the eyes of voters, but it was largely overshadowed by the candidate's verbal miscues. More recently, he came under criticism for failing to mention Afghanistan in his speech at the Republican National Conventionan oversight he sought to remedy on the 9/11 anniversary with a speech praising members of the military

You mean like how John Kerry politicized the Iraq War (during a time of war) against Bush during the 2004 campaign?

And did you hear the media crying foul about it when a Democrat politicizes international events during an election campaign, against a sitting president?

Nope, didn't think so. But Romney is a Republican challenger, so of course it's a bad thing.

I say, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

You're so transparent PowerStroker. And SO gullible to left-wing, partisan groupthink. Open your eyes and recognize that:

1) there are two sides to every issue

2) Democrats are guilty 100% of the time of the things they get outraged about and accuse Republicans of doing

3) Democrats are not perfect all the time, and quite often Republicans are more correct than Democrats are on any given issue

John Kerry was proposing ending the Iraq war, which is a proper political debate because it can bring about change. Mitt Romney is trolling around for any bad news he can latch on to, in this case, the death of an Ambasador, but has yet to explain what change he is advocating by making political hay out of his murder. Perhaps you can enlighten me in that regard?

I've never heard of this publication, which doesn't mean they aren't telling the truth, but I'd like to see some American journalism agree with their conclusions before I make a judgement.

"The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal."

"According to senior diplomatic sources", (Gerry noice how the sources were not identified, that's usually a red flag in real journalism, but ofcourse you already knew that with your BS degree)

"the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted."

^^^Obscure threats to American interests are common, without a threat that specifically lists the embassy it's hard to predict this would happen.  If we locked down everything every time an obscure threat surfaced, all of us would always be on lockdown.

"Senior officials are increasingly convinced, however, that the ferocious nature of the Benghazi attack,"

A good journalist would have named who these senior officials are.

Basically I'm not impressed with the reporting on this.  It attempts to lead the reader to conclusions, without offering nearly enough specific facts.  If you can show me some specific way in which the Obama administration dropped the ball I'm happy to check it out, but at this point, it appears to me that you're doing the same thing Romney is by trying to turn a tragedy into a political advantage for you.  It's not working out well for Romney, but you never know, maybe you'll have better luck.

Call a spade a spade, Powerstroker. Get real, man. It's still politicizing an international event, to score political points, no matter how you slice it. Any time someone takes an external event and uses it to score political points, it should be wrong, as you indicated. But the fact is, that there is plenty of precedent for it. It's not like Romney was the first presidential aspirant to ever do this.

Revealed: inside story of US envoy's assassination

Exclusive: America 'was warned of embassy attack but did nothing'

Kim Sengupta

Friday, 14 September 2012
The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal.

American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.

The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Sensitive documents have gone missing from the consulate in Benghazi and the supposedly secret location of the "safe house" in the city, where the staff had retreated, came under sustained mortar attack. Other such refuges across the country are no longer deemed "safe".

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

Mr Stevens had been on a visit to Germany, Austria and Sweden and had just returned to Libya when the Benghazi trip took place with the US embassy's security staff deciding that the trip could be undertaken safely.

Eight Americans, some from the military, were wounded in the attack which claimed the lives of Mr Stevens, Sean Smith, an information officer, and two US Marines. All staff from Benghazi have now been moved to the capital, Tripoli, and those whose work is deemed to be non-essential may be flown out of Libya.

In the meantime a Marine Corps FAST Anti-Terrorism Reaction Team has already arrived in the country from a base in Spain and other personnel are believed to be on the way. Additional units have been put on standby to move to other states where their presence may be needed in the outbreak of anti-American fury triggered by publicity about a film which demeaned the Prophet Mohamed.

A mob of several hundred stormed the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa yesterday. Other missions which have been put on special alert include almost all those in the Middle East, as well as in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Burundi and Zambia.

Senior officials are increasingly convinced, however, that the ferocious nature of the Benghazi attack, in which rocket-propelled grenades were used, indicated it was not the result of spontaneous anger due to the video, called Innocence of Muslims. Patrick Kennedy, Under-Secretary at the State Department, said he was convinced the assault was planned due to its extensive nature and the proliferation of weapons.

There is growing belief that the attack was in revenge for the killing in a drone strike in Pakistan of Mohammed Hassan Qaed, an al-Qa'ida operative who was, as his nom-de-guerre Abu Yahya al-Libi suggests, from Libya, and timed for the anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

Senator Bill Nelson, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: "I am asking my colleagues on the committee to immediately investigate what role al-Qa'ida or its affiliates may have played in the attack and to take appropriate action."

According to security sources the consulate had been given a "health check" in preparation for any violence connected to the 9/11 anniversary. In the event, the perimeter was breached within 15 minutes of an angry crowd starting to attack it at around 10pm on Tuesday night. There was, according to witnesses, little defence put up by the 30 or more local guards meant to protect the staff. Ali Fetori, a 59-year-old accountant who lives near by, said: "The security people just all ran away and the people in charge were the young men with guns and bombs."

Wissam Buhmeid, the commander of the Tripoli government-sanctioned Libya's Shield Brigade, effectively a police force for Benghazi, maintained that it was anger over the Mohamed video which made the guards abandon their post. "There were definitely people from the security forces who let the attack happen because they were themselves offended by the film; they would absolutely put their loyalty to the Prophet over the consulate. The deaths are all nothing compared to insulting the Prophet."

Mr Stevens, it is believed, was left in the building by the rest of the staff after they failed to find him in dense smoke caused by a blaze which had engulfed the building. He was discovered lying unconscious by local people and taken to a hospital, the Benghazi Medical Centre, where, according to a doctor, Ziad Abu Ziad, he died from smoke inhalation.

An eight-strong American rescue team was sent from Tripoli and taken by troops under Captain Fathi al- Obeidi, of the February 17 Brigade, to the secret safe house to extract around 40 US staff. The building then came under fire from heavy weapons. "I don't know how they found the place to carry out the attack. It was planned, the accuracy with which the mortars hit us was too good for any ordinary revolutionaries," said Captain Obeidi. "It began to rain down on us, about six mortars fell directly on the path to the villa."

Libyan reinforcements eventually arrived, and the attack ended. News had arrived of Mr Stevens, and his body was picked up from the hospital and taken back to Tripoli with the other dead and the survivors.

Mr Stevens' mother, Mary Commanday, spoke of her son yesterday. "He did love what he did, and he did a very good job with it. He could have done a lot of other things, but this was his passion. I have a hole in my heart," she said.

Global anger: The protests spread

Yemen

The furore across the Middle East over the controversial film about the Prophet Mohamed is now threatening to get out of control. In Sana'a, the Yemeni capital, yesterday around 5,000 demonstrators attacked the US embassy, leaving at least 15 people injured. Young protesters, shouted: "We sacrifice ourselves for you, Messenger of God," smashed windows of the security offices and burned at least five cars, witnesses said.

Egypt

Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi yesterday condemned the attack in Benghazi that killed the US ambassador. In a speech in Brussels, Mr Morsi said he had spoken to President Obama and condemned "in the clearest terms" the Tuesday attacks. Despite this, and possibly playing to a domestic audience, President Obama said yesterday that "I don't think we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy".

Demonstrators in Cairo attacked the mission on Tuesday evening and protests have continued since.

Iraq

Militants said the anti-Islamic film "will put all the American interests Iraq in danger" and called on Muslims everywhere to "face our joint enemy", as protesters in Baghdad burned American flags yesterday. The warning from the Iranian-backed group Asaib Ahl al-Haq came as demonstrators demanded the closure of the US embassy in the capital.

Bangladesh

Islamists warned they may "besiege" the US embassy in Dhaka after security forces stopped around 1,000 protesters marching to the building. The Khelafat Andolon group called for bigger protests as demonstrators threw their fists in the air, burned the flag and chanted anti-US slogans.

Others

There was a Hamas-organised protest in Gaza City, and as many as 100 Arab Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv. In Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai postponed a trip to Norway, fearing violence. Officials in Pakistan said they "expected protests". Protesters in Tunis burnt US flags.

Obviously you've never been to a newsstand in the UK, then. You need to get out more, PowerStroker.

What about the un-named sources that Woodward and Bernstein used for many months in their Watergate expose series that took down Nixon? Was that a red flag, too?

How many obscure threats have YOU received? Are you always on lockdown? I'm sure not....

I'm not running for political office, last time I checked, so not sure how I could be turning a discussion thread into political advantage.

I guess you're just feeling Pwned by me, so you have to accuse me of turning a tragedy into political advantage? LOL !!

Get a load of this guy, Rex. Next thing you know, he'll be accusing me of helping start the Iraq war or something .....

Well, it appears to be a left leaning British tabloid, so I'd probably pick up a copy if I ever wander over there on a world tour.

I have a mixed opinion of tabloids. On one hand, they have broken some significant stories, but on the other hand, they seem to be a little more trigger happy about publishing things before all of the facts are in when compared to a more respected publication. I have nothing to disprove the article, though there isn't much to disprove in it anyway.

As to my point for coming here all the time and being a libtard, it's mostly for my entertainment. You guys are like junk food for my brain, so thanks!

I'm really trying to wrap my head around the whole point of this thread. Is there something Obama could have done to prevent a wacko from making an anti Muslim video which enraged all of the Muslims of the world?

How is this Obama's fault exactly?

the Obama administration continues its failed policy of abandoning friends, bowing to enemies and apologizing for America at every turn. It's uncannily reminiscent of the Carter era. Apparently, all the "hope and change" fomented during the Arab Spring has resulted in quite a spectacular Arab Fall.

In Egypt on Tuesday, protesters allegedly became angry over a film that they claimed insulted the murderous pedophile Mohammed. Reminiscent of their sieges of Christian cities in the 7th and 8th centuries, they scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, hauled down and desecrated its American flags and replaced them with black flags containing Islamic emblems and the words, "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is his messenger." The riot prompted U.S. security guards to fire off a volley of warning shots as a large crowd of more than 2,000 angry Muslims (is there any other kind?) gathered outside the embassy. Egypt, of course, is the country for whom the Obama regime just announced it will forgive $1 billion worth of debt to the American taxpayer. And this is the thanks we get.

Of course, BO isn't sure if Egypt is an ally, so the confusion is hardly surprising.

The official response to the initial violence (before the walls were breached) from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was offensive, at best. The embassy issued a statement condemning "the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims." So Muslim riots and attacks on our embassy -- on 9/11 -- are the fault of some amateurs with a video camera?

Mitt Romney weighed in immediately after the embassy's apology, saying, "It's disgraceful that the Obama administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks." Naturally, the Leftmedia went apoplectic and changed the focus to Romney's "timing" and his "politicization" of the matter instead of Obama's Carter-esque foreign policy failings.

Obama quickly responded and threw his embassy personnel under the bus, saying the embassy's statement "didn't come from me, [and] it didn't come from Secretary [of State Hillary] Clinton." Always passing the buck. He then helpfully added, "[T]he United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." This was just a week after members of his own Democrat party at their convention loudly rejected the most central tenet of Liberty, that it is "endowed by our Creator" and not the gift of benevolent political masters. And just months after the administration trampled religious liberty with its ObamaCare contraception mandate.

Later Tuesday, events turned deadly in Libya. During a night attack on the U.S. consulate and a safe house in Benghazi, Islamists killed U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three American security personnel. U.S. officials said the Benghazi attack may have been planned around the distraction of the protests, and it seems that members of the Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, an offshoot of al-Qa'ida, perpetrated it. Libyan officials say they've already made arrests. "It bears the hallmarks of an organized attack," one U.S. official said. Yet other squishy U.S. officials cautioned against assuming that the attacks were even terrorist attacks, much less deliberately organized to coincide with the 9/11 anniversary. Right, just an unfortunate coincidence that Muslims attack U.S. embassies on the anniversary of the deadliest Muslim attack on America.

Ambassador Stevens was on the side of the "freedom fighters" when the recent Libyan revolution was at its most vulnerable, in danger of being crushed by Moammar Gadhafi's troops when they were moving on Benghazi. During the early days of the revolution, Stevens boarded a Greek cargo ship and sailed right into Benghazi, working with the rebels and offering his support throughout the revolution. For his courage and steadfastness, he received a murderous show of gratitude.

Worse still, reports indicate that the U.S. had advance warning of the attacks and yet did nothing to place embassies on high alert. The White House, of course, denies this -- which would be plausible only because Obama skips so many intelligence briefings.

As has been the case for roughly 5,000 years, the situation in the Middle East remains tense and dangerous. Obama isn't helping, as on Tuesday the White House declined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to meet the president during a UN conference at the end of the month. Of course, the White House denies the snub, but to turn John Kerry's comments at last week's DNC back on Democrats, we'll take the word of Netanyahu over Obama any day. Adding insult to injury, Obama announced the same day as the snub that he'll appear with David Letterman next week, and his campaign spent the week raffling chances to attend a fundraiser with various celebrities. It's always good to know where our president's priorities are.
