420 SEL: OVER MY HEAD!!!

Boys and girls... I've come to the conclusion that one needs a little more than just instructions from the internet to tear down the engine expecting to simply pull the heads off for cleaning/resurfacing..... and to put engine back together, expecting to hear that engine purr again?!?!

Now I have parts throughout the garage and a very disappointed wife.  I thought for sure I could complete the job.

If anyone knows a mechanic, in the Dallas / Ft Worth area, who is willing to simply remove heads (I've removed every thing else) ..allowing me to have resurfaced... afterwards, reinstall heads... it would be very much appreciated.

Have yet to find a mechanic who is willing to do the work??

A contact of local mechanic, willing to help, would be greatly appreciated!!

Truth be known, it's often times less expensive to replace the entire engine than to do the top end off the right way. Yes it's a lot of work, and it will take a lot of time if you clean and do everything properly. From a dollar standpoint, with the cost of possible cams, head-work, gaskets, timing chain, tensioner, gaskets, and all the little rubber vaccum tubes + various seals... Well even for a mechanic it's going to be a few G at minimum, not including the near 30 labor hours the job calls for.

An engine swap can also be a big job if you dont have the equipment, but in your case it might be a less expensive and much quicker turn around, even if you had a shop do it.

It's possible to pick up a 560 engine and that would go right in your vehicle. Matter of a fact, if you know anyone interested I have a nice warmed over 560 engine with transmission that I could sell. Recently picked up a car for parts.

I don't know of any people in Texas, but you may want to consider sourcing an entire engine close to you and getting quotes on having that installed. You can take your time and build the old engine if you want. Even if you do pick up a used engine I would suggest having the chain guides replaced at min. Good possibility whatever you get will need a chain too. But still far less expensive that what you are getting into.

Internal engine work on Mercedes is high dollar. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
