Can you imagine the outrage if Obama was denied the State of the Union!?

Actually Speaker Boehner did deny President Obama his preferred date for a SOTU address, so there is precedent for this.

The whole SOTU to a joint session of Congress is a relatively new phenomenon anyway that began around the time of television. Prior to that, it was typed and delivered to Congress, where most members wouldn't bother even reading it. Speaker Pelosi is happy to host Trump's SOTU in the House chamber after the government has re-opened. This way the people providing security and logistical support for an event of this magnitude would actually be paid for their services. And if President Trump just has to do it sooner, he can certainly do it from the Oval Office, or even go old school and send a paper copy of it to Congress. He has lots of options, so I fail to see the big deal here.

I think today is the first day that Trump actually found out that per the Constitution, he needs to actually be invited to Congress. Better late than never though on those civics lessons.

I mean, the thought of Pelosi sticking it to Trump and the rest of the Americans who wants to hear what he has to say, plus them 800,000 Government employees and you know, "the Government" and "the People" be damned?

I remember lots of stuff. I'm neither feeling good nor bad about this. It is what it is. President Trump can do his speech anywhere and any time he wants, unless he wants to address a joint session of Congress, in which case there may be some preconditions imposed by the co-equal branch of government that resides there.

The only part of this that makes me grin, is the hope that Trump's ego, and desire to grandstand will be enough for him to re-open the government while the debate continues about border security. So yes, people getting paid for their hard work makes me grin, because it's the American way.

Looks like the president made his decision while we were in the middle of discussing this. ABC News is reporting that Trump has decided to wait until the shutdown is over before giving the SOTU speech so he can do it in the House chamber.

Of course, it wouldn't be Trump if he didn't demand the best!

Feel bad about them government workers though, really... It started off that most were thinking they would get a two week paid vacation over the holidays but it has really taken a turn! Now many are facing serious hardships that in many way mirror what a lot of regular Americans went thru during the recession. It is really hard when you're already usually getting paid for two week prior as most places hold two weeks when you start a new job - except for cushy jobs and some skilled trades.. I would say Government work is relatively cushy and up until now just the association was a financial certainty. Many people have been unemployed for long periods of time in all kinds of different job positions... Take for example all the people being laid off by GM, there is no special consideration for them. They got unions to squash that $hit!

The actual government employees will probably get back pay and hopefully they aren't evicted by then. But there are a couple MILLION people who work for private companies that do contract work for the government, and none of those people will see a dime of back pay. I fear what the ripple effect through the entire economy could end up being. Yet there is a part of me that wants to let President Trump get it all out of his system at once so he doesn't do this again.

You are aware that letting President Trump get it out of his system could stretch all the way on thru until the 2020 election where both parties go "all in"...

You are aware that a stare down between Pelosi and Trump won't be something they will be able to work out, neither will give up and inch - it is just who they are... more or less it could get dropped in our laps. If Trump can hold the line and keep the lights on until 2020 many will feel he cut cost as many Government employees will no doubt find other work, or have credit scores that prevent them from renewing their required security clearances. If this goes on past another month I think we will find out just how bare bones the Government can run as many will have no choice but to seek other employment and the unemployment centers start processing claims.

You are aware that is where it is going with the current attitudes, right?

Lets think about all of what's going on right now....

* We have high level nuclear waste in every state, that's been cleared to go to Yucca Mountain repository, via road & rail, & through towns, cities & federal reserves, but now the Gov't has changed their minds...

* We have a massive ball-of-plastic-rubbish accumulating in the Atlantic ocean...And nothing can be done about it either...

* We have a President who refuses to acknowledge International protocol's about national pollution output levels...

* We have no new nuclear projects in sight on our own US-of-A soil, but are happy to sell this corrupted shyte to the rest-of-the-world...

* We have millions of folks wanting to enter the US-of-A looking for a better way of life, but are being threatened with a wall to prohibit entry, & yet their own country remains corrupted from US-of-A historical involvement.

* We have no immediate threats from anyone around the world at Def-Con level, & yet our President is secretly & illegally building Star Wars 2 military space installations. And spending Billions to do so...

* We have never-ending-war in the Middle East, that we sell our highest-tech weaponry to Israel for money.

* We have massive National debt, with no sign of balancing the books in sight.

* We have a government that's been shut down since before Christmas, & a President who wants to keep it shut down.

And we have some people that still want to vote him back in...

You are aware Nancy will be pushing 80 by the time 2020 rolls around dont you Rastus?

While there is no maximum age limit to run for President, Federal judges are discouraged from serving much past 80.

So I seriously doubt what you suggest would ever happen.

I doubt Nancy will back down, because to do so would give Trump an incentive to pull this crap anytime he wants something. It's exactly why we don't negotiate with terrorists as a matter of policy. Trump probably wont back down either, but the Republican Senate could eventually force the issue if they get enough flack from their constituents.

This idea that we should be using this as an experiment to see how lean we can run the government is very misguided. The answer to said question will likely be given to us in the form of a couple commercial planes crashing into each other, as air traffic controllers are federal employees. That is only one of many possible scenarios of how your question will be answered, and the other possibilities aren't any better.

Cutting fat in the Government is ever bit as important as it is in a business. I think many will come to blame the Democrats for this but we will see come 2020.... 2.2 Million people is a far cry from the electorate, and almost half of them will still have a job and feel "special" under this administration. I think Nancy has bitten off more than she can chew as #3... this is not going to end well for her, could be rather embarrassing for her actually.
