With Sam Nunn retired...there leaves only one choice...
Nancy, 2020 !!!
You could do much worse, & we have done so in the past !

Her new deal is only a starting point for a negotiation. Now it's up to you guys to offer amendments and alternative suggestions, at least if you're actually interested in governing anyway.
In a "normal" setting someone who proposes such crazy nonsense as AOC would just be fired before they could actually cause catastrophic danger to the company.
I think voters are going to sit AOC down in 2020 and let her know she is fired.
Be aware she received less than 17,000 to win the seat....
Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose sudden rise to prominence has made her a target of Republicans and a sometime irritant to her partys leaders, called capitalism an irredeemable system that is to blame for income inequality.
The 29-year-old, first-term U.S. House member from New York and self-described democratic socialist addressed an enthusiastic crowd Saturday at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, about issues that resonate with her fellow millennials, from universal healthcare to combating climate change.
She directed some of her sharpest comments at an economic system that she said values profit over people.
Capitalism is an ideology of capital - the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit, Ocasio-Cortez said. And that comes at any cost to people and to the environment, she said, so to me capitalism is irredeemable.
Though she said she doesnt think all parts of capitalism should be abandoned, were reckoning with the consequences of putting profit above everything else in society. And what that means is people cant afford to live. For me, its a question of priorities and right now I dont think our model is sustainable.
Instead of conservative politicians scaring people that socialism means the government is going to take over their business, we should be scared right now because corporations have taken over our government, she said.

But according to PowerStroker she is PRO CAPITALISM....lol
He obviously never bothered to read her GREEN NEW DEAL and was going to defend her because of the D by her name...
There is absolutely NOTHING pro capitalism about AOC...

The problem with AOC is she does not understand there is no way to keep the parts of capitalism that make the BIG bucks when the government takes control over who gets what from the proceeds which is EXACTLY what her intention is...
she thinks all will stay the same but the government get the bulk share of the profits in the end...
She wants 70-90% of everything over 10 million dollars...
innovation will cease immediately as no one will want to take any risk in that environment...corporations and billionaires will leave take there jobs with them and watch those who stay starve...
it may give the left some sort of feel good moment to dream about such a UTOPIA...but a world where a Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos will just do what they did under capitalism, when the government is going to divide up the profits, does not exist...
and it is insane to think it will ever exist...
It is not CAPITALISM if the government just allows you to make something but they will make certain that the proceeds are distributed more fair....
She wouldn't know Capitalism it it kicked her right in her mule teeth.
Ops post is why I had to post that. Remember, research proves 4-6% of the population will remain brainwashed even when presented undeniable facts.
I don't think she read the green new deal and probably didn't write it either (check that other thread I put up on her, "brains behind OAC") She won't take public transportation even though metro is 138 feet from her door, throws away plastic bags vs recycling, seen her campaign costs gas guzzlers vs metro? Over 30K on carbon footprint and $7K on metro and bet that wasn't her spent the metro cash but her workers. Flys everythere, what she gonna do when no more airplanes and fossil fuel? Showed up in Austin in a HUGE SUV.
She just means all the small unimportant people can go without Jets, Big SUVs and beef... you know, her constituents who now have less opportunity thanks to her Amazon fiasco. She is a Jessie Smollett poster child that basically is doing the same thing with impunity!
Oh, and Nuffan - Bill gates in the 90s and early 2000s could have really done some great things to prevent what we have today - social media companies harvesting our data, but due to Government Anti-Trust laws his hands were tied and now we have things like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the likes because Bill just up and retired then took his marbles to Africa! Probably to avoid taxes in part.

Gates saw the internet as something that would create demand for his product...
He was long retired before many of the things you name were even conceived...
The services you speak of...facebook, twitter, Instagram...all of them create demand for devices...all of them the consumer volunteers to put the information out there...
all of them were brilliant and offered the best in class for the service they provided...you can create your own facebook...you just can not call it facebook...and it will likely never topple the giant...but you can try....lol

It just shows how little you know about the industry...
Windows had come out with a way to share your life much like your Facebook and other social media applications today but much better... If you knew the period, then you would know Windows and Gates had the entire game tied up with his "MSN MESSENGER", and office suite products including the web browser "Internet Explorer" which was sued by Netscape under Anti-Trust grounds! Also the Government stepped in and broke it up much like Warren is advocating for Apple.
The truth is you really don't even know what you're talking about, trying to laugh off your ignorance by suggesting I open up another Facebook? Before facebook there was MySpace, before that Yahoo, before that AOL... trust me, anyone who knows is laughing at you since the #1 name of the game is to keep people sharing and in front of their computers... Whoever has the best interface at the moment wins, but no one will top Gates dominice during the infant stages of the internet - think dial up.
The irony is that the government intervention that they called Anti-Trust really just made it to where so many people out there using so many different browsers and plug-ins that you would almost need to be a billion dollar company to keep up with all the coding for all the different devices and cell phones out today. Even at it's core ICANN, they figured out a way to yet add another tax to the domain naming system with "https" designation that will see anyone paying a little bit more for what shouldn't even ever be an issue with a VPN connection anyway! It's just another way to lock out someone who might have a better idea.
Regardless what platform of social media or the web you use to "get out there" you will always have to cede a certain amount of data to be viewed when you're not connected. Most new social media sites are more than happy to store your data such as photos and post because they can capitalize on that. Nobody ever said Facebook was a good system, except maybe your layman ass, but it did get almost instant backing in terms of CASH and also a great deal of corporate support - most all big companies will advertise on the large platforms! Heck, even the FBI and all the three letter agencies have accounts across all the major platforms...
Really not much difference between Tom Anderson's "MySpace" and "Facebook" today, except Tom Anderson did not have the big money corporate backers. He took the golden parachute and he was smart for doing so because even he knew that a social medias dominance is finite. On and on they go cannibalizing one another in an effort to collect as much data about someone going as far back as possible.

Probably the best example of unregulated capitalism I can think of, would be prescription drug prices. If you guys think what big pharma is doing to us is a beacon of freedom and the ideal the founders envisioned, then by all means keep voting Republican.
I believe when they come up with a cure for something, they should absolutely be able to make a pretty profit on it to more than recover their R&D and production costs etc. But when their patent finally is about to expire, and they make a tiny change to the formulation and use fancy lawyering to renew their patent for another couple decades for the purpose of absolutely gouging the people for something that has already paid for itself many times over, that is an abuse. When they intentionally KILL people by getting as many people as possible addicted to opoids so they can make some more money on something they didn't even invent anyway, that is also an abuse that I feel needs to be addressed, and so does AOC. This notion that an absolutely unregulated market is a "self correcting engine" is, and always has been bullshit. Markets require regulation, feel free to disagree, but pray you never contract an illness for which the medicine will cost several hundred thousand dollars per year.
Putting reasonable regulations on markets is not communism or socialism, it's pragmatism.

I'd say it's more of kickback to corrupt politicians on both sides and not so much to do with capitalism.
^^^ A strong argument for having publicly financed elections and banning corporate money.
None of us will ever be free so long as our representatives are constantly bombarded with corporate money, or the threat of an incredibly well financed primary opponent.
Rex, I'm glad you agree, and I would submit that even if the top executive at a big pharmaceutical company only got to make $10 million per year, it would still be an incentive to innovate. President Trump now runs a much larger organization for far less. Some people from both sides of the aisle are still driven more by a desire to contribute to the greater good, and not just a greater bank account. Many of the great pharmaceutical innovations were actually funded through our tax dollars anyway through NIH grants. To let a profiteer use innovations we paid for in order to gouge us, doesn't serve us very well at all.

The one confused here is you...
The first anti trust was about SELLING DOS (Disk Operating System) to IBM...
Then he immediately released MS-DOS the same exact product he just sold to IBM...
The second was for including hooks for his browser as part of the operating system...
the distinction between operating system and software was a thin line at the time...DOJ got it right...
The anti trust was not about the browser itself but the hooks in the operating system his browse got to use when no other browser could...
"Underlying these disputes were questions over whether Microsoft had manipulated its application programming interfaces to favor IE over third-party web browsers, Microsoft's conduct in forming restrictive licensing agreements with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and Microsoft's intent in its course of conduct."
Internet Explorer continued to be packaged with the OS but the private hooks had to be made for all software developers...
Gates maintained his dominance over OPERATING SYSTEMS...but lost the battle on add on software...
The rest is just dribble...
YOU can build a facebook...it is just a website...a very popular website...
I stated only the best in class survive....before AOL was PRODIGY...
While Yahoo is still around it is struggling because of the likes of GOOGLE...
people thought for a long time that no one would take out Yahoo as the top search engine...but it happened...
I was a software developer through the 80's it is how I got into database programming...

Nobody ever said Facebook was a good system, except maybe your layman ass
Do you actually understand WHY Zuckerberg got the backing he got?
because he create a system that generated instant demand...
He crashed the Harvard Network with what was called FACEMASH a webpage he created in less than a day that got over 22K hits in the first two hours...
it was this that got him the backing...
Yeah, he basically created a Tender website of hot or not out of the entire Harvard student body!
Put anything sexual on the internet and watch the hits pile up!
Such a smart fellow to know that sex sells.. creates a simple program to go around storing photos and then run them as a slide show... such a marvel of genius that guy!
You should join Zuck and Jack for one of their goat dinners!

Actually it was several colleges in the area...most the really brilliant ideas of the world are really simple...as his was...
You seem to really over simplify it...
Hot or Not was already in place, and while he did use the same idea, he took it three steps further...
Hot or Not was not getting the kind of traffic that facemash generated...

GOVERNMENT is the problem...not the solution....
And it is democrats who keep voting down Canadian drugs...
And it is democrats who keep voting down Canadian drugs...
Senators Klobuchar and Sanders (both Democrats) proposed an amendment to allow for the reimportation of Canadian drugs. It was killed by 13 Dems, and 39 Republicans.
Let us not pretend for even a moment that the Democratic party is the majority shareholder in this blame. And as I recal, it was Republicans who banned Medicare from negotiating with pharmaceutical companies, which would eliminate the need for reimportation in the first place.

I am not a fan of Medicare Part D...which was a bipartisan con job....but to claim that if not for Medicare Part D we would not need reimportation is well confusing to say the least...
I am also not a fan of reimportation...this puts the risk all on the individual...
We need a way to allow retailers to source from Canada not allow our citizens to go there or mail order from there...
The problem is places like Rite Aid and Publix, Target and Kaiser Permanente are not allowed to buy from Canada and sell here...the answer is not to facilitating the citizen to buying from a foreign market...which is what that bill would do...
The problem is not Big Pharma...the problem is the FDA...The FDA perpetuates this nightmare because of the slush money it generates...
The problem is the foothold one small corrupted government agency uses FDA approval as a cudgel against the American citizen...
The problem is ASSHOLES like Martin Shkreli that then play the system for personal gain...

I fully agree with this^^^
But his only crime is demonstrating the end state of unregulated capitalism by putting the acquisition of capital above all other priorities, with absolutely no regard for any human or environmental costs... Kind of like what AOC was warning about in the opening post for this thread. She wants to regulate capitalism so the aforementioned asshole, and those like him (they are NOT in short supply) don't murder us in order to make their billions.
Instead of elevating capitalism to a religion, we should realize that it was created by humans, and is thus equally imperfect.

Try again...it is the FDA that allows a SINGLE manufacturer...capitalism and a free market would self correct...get the government in the way and you enable people like Martin Shkreli...
a free market does not allow for patents...patents are how a rich person gets the government to rig capitalism in their favor...
What you ALWAYS fail to GRASP...it is government getting involved that creates the problem...
Martin Shkreli is not a product of the government, he is a product of capitalism. The government locked him up though. I suppose in your religion of free markets, the government should not have intervened in his case, and just let him run free to rape and pillage the American people until such time as market principles "self correct" him. Something that would work about as well and as swiftly as trickle down economics I'm sure.
So far as Martin Shkreli is concerned, I can think of no better poster boy for the policies you advocate.

He was locked up for securities fraud...
The government gave him the monopoly which allowed him to mark up his product as he did...because the government KEPT him from having ANY competition...

So are you suggesting the government needs to dust off the Sherman Antitrust act and start enforcing it again?
I am suggesting the Government should abolish the FDA...
it is the FDA who determines who get to hold a monopoly on a single drug...
IF not for the government (FDA) another manufacturer would compete against him which would keep the price down...
but this is your thread that Cortez is a capitalist...which is clearly a lie...in her own words Capitalism "TO HER" puts capital above all other matters...and she wants to undo that...

Very True IMO...
And it doesn't matter who's elected, the same grand plan marches on in secrecy...Though there are some folks in the US-of-A in-the-know & with courage to leak things out...eg, like the thousands of civilian deaths carried out in secrecy everyday by US-of-A drones in places like the Middle East & Africa that we don't hear about, simply because that schmuck & disgraceful Mr.Trump tightened security on these operations...
The Anglo-American Empire is acting in full force o take over the world completely, & in secrecy from its own peoples...So now, does this = freedom, liberty, & justice ?...
